the Chronic Miasms of Hahnemann in Theory & Practice
with Will Taylor, MD

  • online quizzes for self-assessment & documentation of participation for 13 hours of continuing education credit

Hahnemann considered his work on the chronic diseases - his chronic miasms - to be his greatest contribution to medicine. Yet he predicted the homeopathic community would be slow to appreciate and to successfully apply his work in this area. In an 1827 letter to his colleague Stapf, he suggested “...at least a year will elapse before the others get my book; they will then require more than six months to recover from the shock and astonishment at the monstrous and unheard things, perhaps another six months before they believe in it ... Hence three years from now will elapse before they can do anything useful with it.”

"As much as I'm reluctant to call Hahnemann out, here is one instance where I'll insist he was wrong - his figures fall at least 186 years off the mark. Nowhere in the literature of homeopathy do we find as much confusion and misappropriation of Hahnemann's teachings, as we do in discussion of the nature of chronic disease." - Will Taylor

In this course, Dr. Taylor will

  • carefully explore Hahnemann's descriptions of the chronic miasmatic diseases, tying these into current understandings and classification of disease;
  • expose commonly held myths and misconceptions regarding Hahnemann's teachings;
  • investigate how our historical authors have represented these ideas, or have re-invented them to incorporate their own philosophies of health & disease;
  • outline contemporary teachings regarding the chronic miasms, linking these to the traditional literature;
  • but most importantly -
provide practical examples, in weekly casework and clinical scenarios, of how an understanding of the nature of chronic disease can provide practical tools in daily clinical practice

case management boxPrinciples of Case Mangement
Instructor: Will Taylor, MD
12 hours of recorded video,
from live sessions originally aired September 4 - November 20, 2013

The initial prescription could be compared very much to the opening drive in a game of golf.   We have our rare holes-in-one; but the mark of a proficient practitioner is not so much measured by these rare successes, as it is by the art of proceeding along from there, of following the patient down the path toward cure. Which involves:

  • knowing what to do
  • knowing what not to do
  • understanding when to do or not to do it

and perhaps most importantly, being able to discern

  • what has occurred,
  • where we are now,
  • and what needs to occur next.

Topics addressed in this course:

  • Assessing Remedy Action in the followup setting
  • Understanding and Working with Aggravations
  • The "First Followup Phenomenon"
  • Simillimum or Kind-of-Close-icum ? - identification in retrospect
  • Understanding Cure, Palliation, and Suppression
  • Directions of Cure; what did Hering really say, and where do we go from there?
  • Management of Old Symptoms Returning
  • Repeating the remedy; dose and potency considerations
  • Single-dose and Repetitive dosing strategies - including management of the LM potencies
  • Following up on the close-enoughicum; when the initial prescription was close but not close enough
  • Working with One-sided / Defective cases
  • Special Considerations for the Sensitive Patient
  • The Second Prescription
  • Remedies that Follow
  • Working with Acutes in the chronic case
  • Recognizing and working with Obstacles to Cure
  • Polypharmacy and Multiple Medical Interventions - if, when, how, &` it happens whether we intend it to or not
"What is more beautiful to look upon than the bud during its hourly changes to the rose in its bloom ... The return symptom-image unfolds the knowledge by which we know whether the first prescription was the specific or the palliative, i. e., we may know whether the remedy was deep enough to cure all the deranged vital wrong or simply a superficially acting remedy, capable of only a temporary effect. The many things learned by the action of the first remedy determine the kind of demand made upon the physician for the second prescription."
James Tyler Kent, Lecture on the Second Prescription, 1888

translating boxTranslating the Language of the Patient
to the Language of the Repertory
Instructor: Will Taylor, MD

13.5 hours of recorded video,
from live sessions originally aired 11.February - 18.March, 2014

In his instructions on casetaking, Hahnemann tells us that, “Once the totality of the symptoms that principally determine and distinguish the disease case - in other words, the image of any kind of disease - has been exactly recorded, the most difficult work is done.”

But is it?
For most of us, the work has just begun!
The task of translating the patient's subjective words - and our objective observations - into the language of our literature is a daunting one.

In this 6-week course, we'll explore a variety of approaches for accomplishing this essential task (in both print & electronic literature), addressing such topics as:

  • gelsemiumUnderstanding a 'Complete Symptom' and what to look for in the Repertory.
  • Familiarizing yourself with the structure and content of contemporary repertories.
  • Working with the language: archaic words, technical jargon, anatomical and pathological terminology.
  • The perils of working with English translations of 19th-century German literature.
  • Identifying and working with entry-points into the repertory.
  • Effective use of Cross References, Synonyms and Concepts Files in the (electronic) Synthesis Repertory.
  • Structure and use of “specialty” repertories: Roberts' and Ward's Sensations As If, Boenninghausen's Therapeutic Pocketbook, Phatak's and Boericke's Repertories, Clark's Clinical Repertory, and more.
  • Navigating and using the Mind and Dreams sections of the repertory.
  • When to use Local v/s General modalities and sensations.
  • Evaluating the reliability and completeness of a rubric.
  • How and when to use combined and crossed rubrics in an analysis.
  • Understanding the meaning of a rubric using a comparative study of its remedies.
  • Reconciling the repertory with primary materia medica.

All of this will be explored in the context of casework, with one or more new cases posted each week, carefully chosen to illustrate the concepts and approaches we'll be bringing into focus.

"My inspiration in creating these courses, is to provide the kind of education I wish I'd been able to find earlier in my career. Much of what I've learned along the way is from my own mistakes. And I've made plenty of them - hopefully enough to spare you the need to accumulate your own collection. I look forward to working with you, & hope you can join me in this adventure."

There is a lot going on in our guts.

Our intestinal flora includes between 500-1000 distinct species of bacteria, with at least ten times as many bacteria living in the gut as there are human cells in the body.
The diversity and composition of our gut bacteria has been shown to impact significantly on our health, in numerous ways - with disturbances in bowel flora implicated by modern science in obesity, autoimmune disease, even anxiety and depression.

Nearly a century ago, the British bacteriologist Edward Bach observed abnormal populations of bacteria in the feces of hospitalized patients, and set out to develop vaccines targeted at these species. Fortune had him join forces with the London Homeopathic Hospital, and the bowel nosodes - remedies prepared from fecal bacteria - were born.

Bach's work was continued in collaboration with Charles Wheeler, Thomas Dishington, John Paterson, and most prominently by Elizabeth Paterson, who carried this work into the late 1950's, providing us with valuable evidence-based guidelines for their use in clinical practice.

Contemporary discoveries regarding gut bacteria and epigenetics highlight the significance of interventions that target - positively and negatively - the gut flora.

In this course, we'll trace the history of medical attention to gut flora, from Pasteur and Mechnikov, through John Harvey Kellogg, to the contributions of Edward Bach and John and Elizabeth Paterson, through to present discoveries in the epigenetic implications of our microbial flora. We'll identify the Bach/Paterson bowel nosodes according to contemporary bacteriology, and study these as homeopathic remedies - detailing their characteristics and profiling their roles as primary and intercurrent prescriptions in case management.

Case examples in each session will illustrate the practical use of bowel nosodes in practice, and introduce us to resources available for helping us to identify these in our daily casework.

Acute Care for the Homeopathic Practioner - Part 1
instructor: Will Taylor, MD

  • 17 hours of recorded video, for self-paced study
  • Downloadable lecture handouts for each session
  • Cases
  • Reading materials & resources
  • Online quizzes for self-assessment & documentation of participation for 17 hours of continuing education credit

This course presents homeopathic acute care from the perspective of a family physician with over 29 years of clinical experience, 19 of those dedicated to homeopathic practice in the primary care setting. Through a focus on those acute presentations that are most commonly encountered in primary care, this 17-hour recorded course covers all aspects of care in the acute homeopathic clinic. Cases involving common clinical complaints including acute middle ear infections, croup and upper respiratory infections, pertussis (whooping cough), urinary tract infections, acute diarrhea, acute physical trauma, and acute skin infections provide the context to examine philosophy and principles of practice, alongside related materia medica.

Other important aspects of the course include:

  • How to recognize and work with the nature of acute disease; acute indispositions, true acute disease, and acute expressions of chronic disease
  • The relationship of acute disease to chronic disease and the long-term management of health
  • Case receiving in the acute setting
  • Approaches to perceiving and organizing the totality (the true basis for any homeopathic prescription) in acute cases
  • Prioritization of symptoms; understanding the meaning and significance of the symptoms of the disease vs. the symptoms of the patient
  • Location and selection of rubrics in the Repertory
  • Comparative materia medica in the context of common acute conditions
  • Getting the lead out - efficiency in acute prescribing, without compromising good practice
  • Posology - potency and repetition - in acute settings
  • Practice management; how to provide acute care and still have a life

This course was designed for the practitioner who already has experience but wishes to master new skills for acute cases. But students and even serious home prescribers can benefit from this detailed and comprehensive study of common acute complaints and their homeopathic solutions.

smal remedies boxSmall Remedies your Mother never told you about ...

with Will Taylor, MD
13.5 hours of recorded video, from live sessions originally aired 21.October 2013 - 20.January 2014

Join Will as he explores a collection of "small" remedies his mother never told him about, which he's nevertheless discovered to be valuable in the course of clinical practice.  All remedies discussed will be illustrated in cases provided prior to our live sessions, with a special acknowledgement provided for those who choose to work up the case and identify the needed remedy ahead of our discussion.

In the course of working through these cases, and describing these remedies in close detail, we'll look into some commonly-asked, and seldom adequately answered, questions -

  • What is a small remedy?  And why?
  • Why are some remedies so small, while others grow to the status of a polycrest?
  • Why might we wish to consider a small remedy for a case, when it appears that a polycrest might do?
  • Some remedies appear to be “large” in the context of specific pathologies (e.g., physical trauma) or localities (e.g., “bladder remedies”), while remaining “small” in a more general context - is it realistic to characterize remedies in this way?
  • Can we recognize features in a case which might suggest that it is calling for a small remedy?
  • How might we organize and examine our analysis, to best bring out a small remedy, when one is appropriate to the case?
  • How can we best recognize the significance of a small remedy showing up in an analysis?

           ... and very importantly,

  • How can we find information about, and study, a small remedy, when we cannot find an adequate (or any) description in our materia medica texts?
  • What are some effective ways to study a small remedy in comparison / contrast with other remedies, including those "larger," better-known remedies with which it might be confused?

(*note - the remedies we will cover will not necessarily be those illustrated here, or in the course banner - Will is full of surprises, and likes to keep it that way)
